Woodstock Chimalong is an award winning musical learning toy with a pure musical sound and a simple instruction method for children over 3.
First released in 1986, it is just as educational today. Chimalong has 8 tubes in a foam holder and it produces a rich, beautiful sound.
Each tube is coded in 3 ways: with a colored band, a number, and a corresponding note name on either side of the tube. Just rotate the tube in the holder to see the note name or number.
Each tube is electronically tuned, producing a clear, soft, resonant sound. The tubes are tuned in a diatonic scale pattern, as in the familiar "do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do."
Young children can play the Woodstock Chimalong by either improvising or using the songbook. Music from the songbook can be played by matching colors or notes. Young children from age 3 can play by matching the colors. Older children by matching the numbers. Using the note names is a further progression, which encourages the learning of musical notation.
Just playing randomly produces a rich musical sound. It’s fun and children are drawn to playing like this. Try hitting just one tube. Sing along with each note. Then play 2 tubes simultaneously. You’ll hear a third tone. Sing to this tone. The specific range and key of Chimalong was chosen because it best fits the range of a child’s voice. This encourages your child to sing along and teaches a sense of tone and pitch
The Woodstock Chimalong is a metallophone, meaning sound of metal, and is assembled as one octave in the key of C. It comes with an additional B flat tube and so can be converted to the key of F.
If one of the notes starts to sound a bit odd, check the position of the tube. The tubes can move in the foam holder and they’ll need repositioning to maintain their resonant sound.
An excellent musical learning toy for young children.
