learning toy

If your family loves games, Blokus is essential. Great for children and adults alike. This learning game is fantastic for creative thinking. Warning though; this game is addictive!

The more you get into Blokus, the better it becomes. There are now professional tournaments.

Since its creation in 2000, it has won over 26 awards worldwide!

This board game challenges you. The rules, I mean rule because there is just one, are simple so young children can play and new players can easily get started.

This is an abstract strategy game, i.e. where chance and the luck of the dice is not involved and success depends entirely upon skill. However it is interesting that young children can beat adults. It is a game the whole family can play, and importantly enjoy. It manages to entertain and challenge a wide age group

The game is made up of jewel-colored pieces, each one a unique shape, which are placed in turn on a silver gridded board. The object is to place all your pieces on the board whilst blocking, others playing from using all of theirs. The single rule is your own pieces must touch another of your pieces, but only at the corners, not along the sides. The game is over when players cannot place any more pieces on the board.

Sounds simple? No it’s not. This competitive game is highly addictive; and involves problem solving, spatial thinking, geometry and strategy. kids board game

It is played with 2, 3 or 4 players.

it can be played a number of ways including Draft mode where two players use two color each; Reverse rules where the winner puts down the least number of pieces and solitaire where you see how many pieces you can put down yourself.

If there are 2 players playing this classic set, each player plays two colors in turn. If you always will be playing with two players, consider travel Blokus, which is a better size for 2 and each person plays only one color.

We’ve been playing now for over a year, and it’s still first choice of game on game night. We play it both competitively, but also play cooperatively, where everyone can lay down all their pieces and we give points according to finishing with the pieces containing the lowest number of squares i.e. the one, two and the three pieces. Make sure you count every piece before you start, great job for the kids. Near the end of the game you don’t want to find one pesky piece lurking in the bottom of the box.

Game play takes about 15 to 30 minutes so it’s short enough to play often.

5 years and up is recommended by the manufacturer. But it would need to be a rather switched on 5 year old. I think 6 would be more appropriate.

learning toy Amazon reviews:

"I’m very glad with the choice I’ve made. This is the best family game ever..."

"As an educator, I have found Blokus to be a game that entertains as well as teaches students about reflections, flips, and rotations. The game is engaging, it holds the students’ attention longer than the other games I have purchased. My students participated in tournaments with others classes and practiced often in order to win the competitions. I strongly recommend this game as it teaches problem solving strategies as well as crucial critical thinking skills that are essential for lifelong learners. Furthermore, Blokus is becoming a fast favorite among the adults in my circle of family and friends."

"This game is absolutely addictive! Our whole family (Mom, Dad, 5 and 7) play this game at least weekly if not daily. Very educational and great fun. Amazing how it teaches us to see things in different ways. Highly recommend for anyone and everyone!"
