Many areas are covered such as reading, spelling, vocabulary, math, science, history, geography, logic and problem solving, fitness, health and biology.
Games can be used to develop skills that are weak and to build upon existing interests and skills. Some of the games are now quite complex so they can really move a child ahead who is talented in certain areas.
As children grow perhaps choose games with their favorite characters, if they happen to be well regarded games.
You can choose games which feature multi player modes can allow children to play together, building social and cooperative skills
Whilst one of the benefits of educational video games is the children can play with the game unsupervised as they have built in assistance features, it is always a good idea to play through the game initially with the child or on your own to make sure the content is appropriate for the current skills levels of your child.
The good games have reporting features so parents can monitor the progress of their child. Is the game too hard and therefore frustrating? Is the child being challenged?
But don’t force too much. Remember this is meant to be fun. It’s not homework in another format. And keep it in moderation. After half an hour or so it’s good to send them out to run about if you can!
